Most common running injuries and tips to prevent them

“Long distance running is 90 percent mental and the other half is physical.” ~ Rich Davis

Pushing yourself too far during a run generally results in injury. Your body’s motions can also have an impact to injury/strain.

The most frequent causes of a runner’s injury aren’t related to a particular incident or moment, like twisting your ankle on uneven ground. Instead, they are overuse injuries that occur gradually as a result of problems including increasing your mileage too quickly, using inappropriate form, failing to give your body enough time to recuperate, having tight or weak muscles, and wearing the wrong shoes.

Most common running injuries

1. Runner’s knee

  • A dull discomfort is felt around the front of the knee, either during moving or after prolonged sitting.

2. IT band syndrome

  • Pain on the outside of the knee, often felt when moving about, that may radiate to the hip.

3. Shin splints

  • Pain at the front or inner-facing portion of your lower legs that worsens with activity

4. Plantar fasciitis

  • Pain at or near the bottom of the heel, typically felt after activity (not during) or early the next morning.

5. Achilles Tendinitis

  • Anxiety when trying to lift your toes is accompanied with pain in the lower thigh immediately above the heel.

6. Stress fracture

  • Aching or pain that is noticed during activity and gets worse over time, commonly in the foot or shin.

How can injuries be prevented?

  • Plan ahead and move slowly when advancing your mileage
  • Avoid increasing your acceleration and advancing your distance in the same session
  • Provide your muscles with the rest they require.
  • Understand the distinction between soreness and discomfort that indicates an injury.
  • Schedule a cross-training session.
  • Don’t undervalue the significance of wearing good running shoes.
  • Stretch DAILY
