Most common injuries of the back

1. Sprains and strain

  • This is the most common type of back injury. This is caused by overstretching the muscle in your back or tearing a ligament, the muscle around the affected area becomes inflamed. This inflammation leads to spasms that cause severe lower back pain and difficulty moving.
  • The most common symptoms are:
    1. Muscle spasms or cramps
    2. Difficulty bending, walking, or standing up
    3. Increase pain in the affected area
  • Treatments
    1. Apply a cold compress
    2. Rest
    3. Limit activities/ Stretch

2. Herniated or bulging disc

  • This happens when there is a problem with the rubbery cushions (disc) between your vertebrae and pushes through a tear in the exterior of the disc. Causing nearby nerves to become irritated and create pain.
  • Symptoms
    1. Radiating pain into the arm/leg
    2. Numbness/Tingle
    3. Muscle Weakness
  • Treatments
    1. Rest
    2. Stretching
    3. Seek a PT

3. Fractured vertebra

  • Also called compression fracture, it occurs when the bone collapses upon itself, getting pushed together. Pieces of the bone can explode out into the tissue around the spine. The worst fracture is a fracture-dislocation, in which the bone breaks out, causing the ligaments to be torn.
  • Symptoms
    1. Chronic back pain
    2. Lost height
    3. Hunched posture

    3. Medication

How to prevent back injury

  • Strengthen your back
    Do muscle strengthening and stretching exercises
  • Focus on the good posture
    Good posture can help prevent back pain
  • Lift Correctly
    Lift from your legs, not from the back. Keep your back straight and bend your knees
  • Watch your weight
  • Get enough calcium and Vit. D
  • Have strong abdominals
