The Foot
Supination and pronation in the foot are terms used to describe the mechanics of how you stand, walk and run. Your weight should be balanced on your feet as you move. Your feet should not lean in (pronation) or out (supination).
When properly walking, your foot should be straight forward from heel to toe and your heel, ankle, and knee should form a straight line. This is called neutral.
Having Excess supination:
Causes stress on the outer side of your foot when you walk or run. Your shoe will show wear on the outside part of the sole.
If you supinate (also called underpronation) it can cause strain on your ankles. That may lead to shin splints, calluses, or bunions on the outer side of your foot, and pain in the heels and balls of your feet.
Having Excess pronation:
Excess pronation is also called overpronation, while you are walking, your foot rolls toward the inside and your arch tends to flatten out. Your shoe will show wear on the inside part of the sole.
If you have excessive pronation or excess supination in your foot it can cause an imbalance in your body’s alignment that leads to pain in your:
- Arch
- Heel
- Ankle
- Shin
- Knee
- Hip
- Back
What shoes are right for you?
Everyday, you walk on your feet, forcing them to support the weight of your body. Frequent stress on your foot can cause damage. Choosing the right shoes can help protect your feet. Having the wrong shoes can cause serious foot injuries/pain.
- A good shoe fit will cover your shoe outline. Never choose shoes that don’t cover the outline.
- Know your foot shape
– You need to know the shape of your foot.
– Do this simple test: While standing, place your foot on a piece of paper and trace it. Is your foot straight or curved? - Finding your fit
– Wearing well-fitted, supportive shoes is important. If you have excess supination or pronation you need shoes with proper cushioning and plenty of toe room. - Provides comfort and support
– People who have excess supination need cushioning, flexibility, and support in the heel to balance the outward roll of the foot. While on the other hand, excess pronation needs a more stable shoe with a firm midsole and heel cushioning. - Consider the activity that you are doing
– Wear appropriate shoes if you are playing soccer, running, golf, or basketball.
