Normally people talk about a weak pelvic floor and neglect the fact that you CAN have a problem with your pelvic floor being too tight. What would be the effects if your pelvic floor is too tight? I am certainly glad you asked!

Pelvic floor tension myalgia

Pelvic floor tension myalgia, also known as pelvic floor dysfunction, is a chronic pelvic pain that causes the inability to control your pelvic muscles. When a muscle of the pelvic floor is too tight and constantly contracted, this could cause discomfort and can lead to serious injury.

Pelvic pain or the feeling of discomfort/ heaviness in the lower abdomen is the main symptom of pelvic floor tension myalgia. Aside from pain here are more signs and symptoms you could be experiencing;

  • Frequent or painful in urinating
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Pain after pooping
  • Constipated
  • Bloated
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Lower back pain
  • Recurrent UTI’s

What are the causes?

The pelvic floor muscles support your reproductive organs and bladder. These also help with sexual function, urination, and the passage of stool. These muscles need to be able to relax as needed. Factors that may increase the risk of pelvic pain include;

  • Habitually holding in your urine or stool
  • Injury or trauma to the pelvic muscles during pregnancy, surgery, and childbirth
  • Muscular dysfunction is caused by long sitting, wrong posture, and uneven pelvic bones.
  • Sexual or physical abuse
  • Stress, depression, or anxiety

Prevention

  • Dry needling
  • Eat a healthy diet, fiber-rich diet
  • Stay hydrated
  • Practice good feminine hygiene
  • Relieving yourself of urine and stool ( Do not try to hold your urine/stool)
  • Maintain a good posture
  • Decrease Stress/Anxiety
  • Relaxation Techniques
  • Include exercise, strength training
